Turns out we really did need a rest day today, and much of it was spent on the balcony of our rental, drinking coffee and catching up on things. Since we are leaving here tomorrow, we wanted to be rested and ready for the move, and prepared for the next(and last) week of our trip. I took care of the blog and photos and such while Mario made sandwiches, and a teeny kitten sat on my lap and kept me company. Not sure what we are doing about that - maybe I can stuff her in my backpack and no one will notice.
Speaking of, we've had quite the cast of characters keeping us company this week at the rental, our balcony becoming the safe place for all the cats wanting to escape the strangle holds of three small children. We've named them accordingly.
In order of appearance, we have Stubby-Loudmouth, who announces herself quite vocally upon arrival, and has only half a tail. She comes and goes and seems to have evaded the children, though they call her "Bella".
Next comes Big Snax(the kids call him Cosmo), who always shows up around meal time. He's a very tall cat, probably the tallest I've ever seen. I caught him sleeping tucked into the cushions on the trampoline in the main yard, so I think he's come to accept being chased and dragged around.
Then we have Ghost cat, who no one seems to like. He shows up silently, as though he floats on air, and leaves without a sound. He mostly sits on the top step, and is easily scared by a flick of the broom in his general direction. Our first night here, he showed up with a severe limp, but it has since gone away.
Finally, we have Teeny Kitten, who seems to have not been "claimed" by the family, as per the kids' info. She has taken a real liking to us, giving in to our petting from the very first day here, and finding shelter on top of our kitchen cabinet to avoid the man-handling. Now even more at ease with us(which took about 1 day), she crawls into our laps to doze, and joins us inside in the evenings to cuddle before heading out hunting at night(we assume). We have not fed her once yet, all of her affection is the result of our attention and affection towards her. And as much as we both want to, but haven't really vocalized it, we really can't take her with us.
So that was the extent of the fun today - hanging with the cats. Oh, and we head out to La Perle one last time, just so we didn't feel like we did nothing today. The waves were eating away at the beach again, but less violently than last time, so we even got in the water for a dip. And surprise! The kassav man was cooking up his flour for the week, and had made a few coconut kassavs for passersby's, so we got one last tasty beach snack too.
Tonight, we pack up for our final transfer over to Grande-Terre, where we have a rental set up in Port-Louis. We've been there before and know the area a little, but we're hoping to get better bearings this time, and a really feel for the town. First, though, we have to get there, and with the road blocks and protests ramping up, it might be a challenging drive through the capital city.
Wish us luck.
