Our biggest mistake on the last visit to Paris was a serious screwing up of our sleeping patterns, therefore messing with possible visiting hours available in a day. The flight was too early in the evening, we didn't sleep, we arrived at an ungodly hour of the morning, and then took a really long nap in the middle of the day. For the rest of the trip, we were waking up too late in the morning/afternoon, and staying up late as a result...It was ridiculous, and we ONLY managed to get on a regular schedule just in time to return home.
THIS time, we chose a later flight, forced ourselves to sleep during the flight, arrived in Paris at 7 am, and made our way to the apartment in Montmartre for 10. Mario wanted to take all this effort one step further by dropping our bags and heading right back out again. Sadly, I had other ideas, mainly to pass out in bed for just a few hours. And so we napped.
Just after noon, we headed back out to wander through our new neighborhood - and pick up groceries, as we had now seen what our apartment had to offer, and needed some supplies. Plus, the time had come to scrounge up some snacks, and we knew of a little creperie shop in Montmartre that offered up some tasty snacks.
We wandered around the Butte de Montmartre for a while, just to get our bearings. Then we wandered around the Cimetière de Montmartre, for no other reason than it seemed like a good place o walk. We followed rue des Abbesses back, stopping for wine, cheese, groceries and such, plus a fresh baguette, to stock our little fridge. Then it was back to the apartment to shower and change for dinner.
I get weekly emails from the city of Paris, which I signed up for before last year's trip, and never cancelled. When this trip came around, I began checking what the city had to offer, and happened upon a free Champagne tasting at a restaurant near our apartment. Along with the tasting, they were offering a night of oysters and foie gras, accompanied by a jazz performance by a local artist. I reserved immediately.
Unfortunately, we miscalculated our meal time. We proceeded to taste all the champagnes offered, then sat down to order dinner, only to find out that the perfectly-paired bubbly was available to bring home, but not on the night's menu! In hindsight, we should have enjoyed our samples WITH our meal! We went for a Viognier instead, and enjoyed a platter of fat, salty oysters with lemon, and homemade foie gras served with fresh figs, sweet slices of pear and pearl onions confit. Heavenly.
Of course, the Champagne tasting drew in a good crowd of patrons, and a lot of regulars, who then all sat down for dinner AT THE SAME TIME, completely overwhelming the poor waitress/owner. Luckily, we already had our food, but our table got lost in the shuffle of orders, and we waited a while for dessert. So we listened to the music and watched as the clientele chatted about all manners of things. It was a wonderful evening out, hanging with the neighborhood crowd in a neighborhood restaurant, and we'll reminisce about it tomorrow, as we sip the delicious Champagne from a bottle that we brought home tonight. Yum.
