Getting outta town!

Wait. Is it a holiday in Quebec? Time to get out of town!! As per our long weekend tradition to celebrate the Fête Nationale by not staying in the province and dealing with the crowds, Mario and I have once again planned to run away. Out of the province, and out of the country we go, to the lights and excitement of New York City!

After a particularly long and not very busy shift at the restaurant, I rush home to shower, change and pack some snacks, and just as quickly we are headed down the highway towards the border and New York State. Mario drives first, while I feed him bites of leftover chicken, cherry tomatoes and cubes of mozzarella. We listen to an excellent audiobook of the Hobbit as we go. We breeze through the border, where we get asked when we were last "here". Memories of the road trip across the southern United States come flooding back when I answer.

Somewhere just before Lake George, we switch drivers and I take a turn at the wheel. The roadway is pitch black, illuminated by strings of reflectors that glow in the light of my high beams. As I let my mind relax and just listen to the story, I feel as though I am moving along curved pathways between the stars. The driving becomes second nature. And as quickly as I feel I have sat down in the driver's seat, we arrive in Schenectady, and pull into the parking lot of the Red Roof Inn, our home for the night. It is 2 am, and we both collapse into bed almost as soon as we walk in the door. Thankfully, this just means that tomorrow, New York will be that much closer.
